Polio disease is spread through a virus by inhaling infected droplets present in infected food, water, or air. The polio virus can affect the nervous system once it enters your body. Some children experience only mild symptoms of the flu, but polio can cause paralysis and, if severe, can be fatal.
Polio mainly affects children under the age of five. There is no cure for polio, but getting vaccinated can protect your baby from this infection.
Infected people who do not show symptoms of polio can still transmit this infection to others. Therefore, if children come in contact with people who have not been vaccinated, they can also get this infection.
There are two types of polio vaccine:
Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV)
OPV (polio drops) is an oral vaccine, which contains a live but weakened form of the virus. The virus cannot make the baby sick because it is weak, but his intestines and blood have an immune response and start making antibodies against the virus. In this way, the baby is protected from polio for life. Each time the baby will be given two drops of this medicine as a vaccine.
Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV)
IPV contains inactivated dead virus and is given as an injection. This vaccine causes an immune reaction in the baby's blood, which gives him life-long protection from polio.
Both vaccines protect a child from polio equally, as both cause an immune response in the child's body. That is, if this virus ever enters the child's body in the future, then the immune system will help fight it.
Polio drops are usually given to a newborn baby at birth, so they protect the baby in the beginning. The first dose of polio injection is given six weeks after birth. IPV is sometimes given as a combined vaccine, so this vaccine protects against many diseases.
For many years, India has been declared a polio-free nation. This has been possible only through a massive polio vaccination. To keep India a polio-free country, we have to continue to get all children vaccinated against polio. Children who are not vaccinated against polio are still at risk of contracting the disease because this infection has not been completely eradicated from our surroundings and can still spread easily.
