Pediatricians are experts in the growth, development, and health of infants, kids, and teenagers. Pediatricians are well-versed in the numerous conditions that may have an impact on children's health, welfare, behavior, and learning.
Your child might see a pediatrician
After your child is born, one of the first doctors you will see for his or her care is a pediatrician in the hospital to make sure everything is OK. You might see a pediatrician about your child’s health, growth, and development, or your child needs specialized care and treatment.
Full assessment
After birth, your child may refer to a pediatrician for further assessment and treatment of:
asthma and allergies
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
autism
behaviour challenges
brain conditions like epilepsy
developmental delay
disabilities like Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, or Fragile X syndrome
fecal incontinence or constipation
learning problems
muscle or bone problems like developmental dysplasia of the hip or bow legs
poor growth
Sleep problems.
Vaccines
Your child might see a pediatrician follow the vaccination schedule. The vaccination will be provided by the hospital at the time of birth. Vaccinations help fend off infection and keep children immune to certain diseases. They are recommended for children at a variety of points as they age from birth to 18 years.
Development
Your child may see the pediatrician to monitor his developmental progress or milestones. At each visit, your child will be weighed and measured to evaluate his growth in weight, height, and body mass index (BMI). The doctor will show you how this compares to other kids of the same age and gender so you can gauge how your child is progressing.
Illness
Almost all children will have an illness at some point, but how do you know when it’s time to have your child checked out? If he looks very ill, is unusually drowsy, or is very fussy. He has signs of dehydration, such as a dry mouth, sunken soft spot, or significantly fewer wet diapers, and is not able to take in fluids. If he has immune system problems, such as sickle cell disease or cancer, or is taking steroids or has had a seizure, then you need to see a pediatrician immediately.
Behavior
Your pediatrician can offer guidance into some type of behavioral problem with their children, whether it be learning difficulties, discipline issues, or bed wetting. Your child may refer to a developmental-behavioral pediatrician. The developmental-behavioral pediatrician may work with a team, including a psychologist, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, or others, to help your child.
